Jennifer Garner was born on April 17, 1972, in Houston, Texas but was born within Charleston, West Virginia. Her dad, William John Garner, worked as a chemical engineer at Union Carbide. Patricia Ann was a teacher at the local university. Her father was a chemical engineer so she wanted to be as skilled as him. To fulfill her ambition to be an actor and pursue her acting career, she decided to relocate to New York and try her hand in the world of Hollywood. In her Broadway performances were followed by work in a local eatery. Garner was a guest star in the television series "Felicity." (It it was on that show that she met her first husband Scott Foley.) Garner was given her first major part with "13 going on thirty" which was a romantic comedy that was well-received. She played a teenage girl trapped inside the adult body. Garner chose Gary Winick for the role of director. Both actors continued working in other films up to the time Winick passed away in 2011. Garner earned the honorary title of artist ambassador in 2009 for Save the Children U.S.A. The program focuses on literacy, nutrition and early childhood education. In 2014, Garner has been a part of the board of trustees for this group, promoting early childhood education. She has been a spokesperson of the Early Steps to School Success Program, where she coaches parents on how to best help their children to learn.
